More Reasons to Try Alone in the Dark

First off, I should mention that the author of the article I'm about to link seems like a douchenozzle, his picture makes him look like a serial rapist, and I generally think it's lame when reviews are picked apart anally. On the other hand, I was really looking forward to Alone in the Dark before it got almost universally panned, receiving 5s and 3.5s, the latter score being the focus of Daniel Weissenberger's attached rant.

He makes a good argument for the game, even if he's far too wordy and smug, but maybe that's the point of the site. If I had to review his review of IGN's review, I'd probably mention the way he migrates from regular, literate human speak to something like "BTW," as if it pounced straight from his chat box to MS Word and latched to the electronic fibers like a tick.

For the record, here are some of the survival horror games out there with worse melee combat than AitD: Every other Alone in the Dark - Nocturne (and the Blair Witch sequels) - Every Resident Evil game - Every Clock Tower game (including Haunting Grounds) - Dino Crisis 1-3 - Obscure 1+2 - The Suffering 1+2 - Every Silent Hill game - Dead Rising.

Okay, I'll admit it, I only made it to about word 4,874 before giving up on finishing the article, but it's nice to read something positive about AitD, even if it's a little fucking late. Has anyone here played it?

I loved part 4 and bought it when it came out (on the PC, mind you), but I guess I let the hype machine get the better of me this time around.

It's too bad really, because I thought certain aspects of the game showed some real promise.

Have you played it?

Sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear. No, I haven't played it.

I enjoyed the demo and a coworker of mine recommended it. Apparently there is a patch coming out to fix some control issues. I will probably give it a go when the patch is available

Yeah, I think I might rent it soon since it seems like the equivalent, length-wise, of checking out a very short television season.
